A chemical process is all the action required to take a material and then transform it over into a final product that has different characteristics. Normally you would use these in order to modify the conditions, properties, or the state of the element so you can use it in a different way. One example of chemical processes used industrial is cement. This can happen with calcination. In this process, limestone, which is just a basic combination of fossilized calcium carbonate, can break down when you put it under high temperatures. This will turn it into a usable form of carbon dioxide gas and calcium oxide. This is a process known as calcination and can be used to create cement as the paste will be inside the concrete.
Next we can move on to the process of smelting. When you are using a blast furnace, the CO will be released by combusting coke (which is just the high-carbon derivative of coal) and them removes all of the oxygen that is not necessary within the ores. This causes the CO2 to get released as the by-product, carrying the oxygen away and leaving us with a pure metal that can be used. There are several options that come with this, but iron smelting can help us create steel.
We can’t get far without talking about the Hall-Heroult process. This happens when Aluminum is smelted together with that coke we talked about before. We would do this using the high-temperature electrolysis reaction. This gives us an output of pure aluminum and a mixture of CO2 and CO to work with.
Industrial chemical processes will help us to take a variety of chemicals and mix and match them, sometimes with the help of high temperatures, to create something brand new. When this is done, we can use these fantastic products in industrial settings.
